The film's screenplay, based upon the life of magician and escape artist Harry Houdini, was written by Philip Yordan, based on the book Houdini by Harold. In real life he was punched in the stomach by a college student who had heard that Houdini could withstand any blow without harm. Houdini is a 1953 American Technicolor film biography from Paramount Pictures, produced by George Pal and Berman Swarttz, directed by George Marshall, that stars Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh.

In the film he almost drowns in the torture tank trick and dies on the stage in the arms of his wife.

The movie contains several factual errors, the most telling of which is the dramatization of Harry Houdini's death.
